DON'T WORRY, LIGHTEN UP

Writer: Nano-Lit TechnologiesNano-Lit Technologies

The world we live in is extraordinary.

We grew up in a world that’s encased by sunlight. Light in itself is over a billion years old, older than any dinosaur that was around. (Explain that, Neil DeGrasse Tyson).

Not only does sunlight give us heat, it turns out that the light source provides infinite health benefits as well.

Various studies have shown us that a daily dose of Vitamin D boosts our mood, our productivity levels, memory retention, and even helps us sleep better at night.

Not only that, but increased exposure to light has even been shown to help improve symptoms of Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and PTSD.

Why Aren’t We Taking Advantage Of It?

However, because it’s such an integral part of Mother Nature, we tend to take light for granted.

In fact, humans spend 90% of time indoors. Isn’t that crazy? That’s like stating that we’re vampires that are afraid of daylight (but the What We Do In The Shadows kind, not the Twilight kind).

While we don’t realize it, the intensity of fluorescent artificial light that we’re constantly exposed to has a lot of negative repercussions.

It disrupts our circadian rhythms, which are our bodies natural biological clocks. In turn, the disrupted sleep patterns lead to a higher risk of diseases such as cancer, higher risk of mood disorders, and greater feelings of loneliness.

A Response To Artificial Light’s Repercussions

The biggest problem with electrical light is that it doesn’t change colour, temperature, angle, and intensity throughout the day, which gives our bodies mixed signals as to what time of day it is.

We’re starting to realize that the human biological clock evolved under natural light, and physiologically was meant to follow the light-dark cycle of the sun.

That’s why Human Centric Lighting (HCL) was invented. Human Centric Lighting is a fairly new concept, with the intention of improving our well-being and regulate our circadian rhythms.

Nano-Lit’s Smart DiffuserTM Lightbar is a prime example of HCL - it shifts colour temperature throughout the day, simulating natural sunlight.

So even in the dead of winter, when it’s a gruesome -40 Celsius outside and you’re wondering when if you’ll ever see the light of day again, you know where the light at the end of the tunnel is. (It’s right above you).
